Course Description: The student will spend two or four weeks on the transplant service. The purpose of this rotation will be to provide a general exposure to the fundamentals of kidney and pancreas transplantation. The student will be expected to gain knowledge about the evaluation of the transplant recipient and understand the basics of preoperative and postoperative management of patients with kidney disease and diabetes as related to their transplant procedure. In addition, the student will be expected to learn the basics of immunosuppressive therapy and infectious diseases in immunosuppressed patients. The student will have the opportunity to see patients preoperatively and postoperatively in the transplant clinics and on rounds. The student will participate in transplant procedures and organ procurements.
